Basically, there are three main categories of health. The first category of health is physical health. Physical health is the health of your body. If you are physically healthy then you can usually work and play well. Your body is able to perform all normal functions of daily activities and generally speaking, you “feel well”. When you have good physical health, you usually have lots of energy. The second category of health is your emotional and intellectual health. This refers to having a healthy mind and things that are associated with thinking and feeling. Feeling good about yourself is an important part of being healthy. Your thoughts are also very important. When you are able to think clearly, you can effectively use your mind to make good decisions and are competent with problem solving. There are many people who experience emotional or intellectual problems which may go undiagnosed for years because the symptoms aren’t always as clear as if you were having physical health problems. Again, generally speaking, if you have a positive attitude and are happy then you most likely have a healthy disposition when it comes to your emotional and intellectual health. The third category of health is social health. Social health is typically referring to how well you get along with others and how well you handle relationships with other people. You are able to enjoy being around your family, your friends, neighbors and fellow workers. Having a good working relationship with others is important for your social health. There are some things you can do to help yourself have good physical, emotional, intellectual and social health. You should set goals for yourself. For example, you could make a list of health habits like getting eight to ten hours of sleep each night, brushing your teeth twice per day and getting plenty of physical activity every day. It may seem difficult to find the time but if you could step away from the computer or television for single hour every day, you will probably find the time to drastically improve your overall health. Take time for personal grooming each day. This can help your physical health by keeping you from getting sick, your emotional health by making you feel better about yourself and certainly your social health…nobody wants to be around a stinky person! Making good decisions about the types of food you are putting into your body also. You should also make regular checkup visits with your primary care physician and dentist each year. This will help catch any problems early on that you may not even be aware are happening. These professionals are trained to spot some of the trouble signs with your physical, emotional and social health and may be able to prevent any long term problems. The most important thing you can do for your health is learn as much as possible about it. The more you learn, the more you will want to take care of every aspect of your health.
