Healthy Heart

You may not know it but having a healthy heart will directly impact your health insurance premiums. Health insurance companies determine the premium they will charge based on the health or medical condition of the “group”. If you are on a group health inurance plan then it is determined based on your company’s employees. If you are on an individual health plan then your premium will be based directly on your health and medical history alone. Although your individual premium won’t be directly effected by your health alone on a group plan, you can see how the entire group will pay higher premiums if there are multiple health concerns within the group. Regardless of how you obtain your health insurance policy, you can help keep the cost of health insurance lower by taking care of yourself and maintaining a health heart. There are many other medical problems that can effect your health but the rising rate of heart disease in America today is one of the most prevalent. The best way to have a healthy heart is by learning how to eat a diet that is “heart-friendly”. Of course, you should always consult with your physician concerning any major changes to your diet but here are a few tips to help you along the way:

  • Your fat intake should only be about thirty percent of your total caloric consumption daily.
  • Less than ten percent of your daily calories should come from saturated fatty acids.
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids should also consist of less than ten percent of your daily calorie intake
  • Between ten and fifteen percent of daily calories will come from monounsaturated fatty acids
  • You shouldn’t have more than three hundred milligrams of cholesterol in a day
  • Keep your sodium intake under three thousand milligrams in a day
  • Be cautious of additives in your food like MSG, caffeine or other additives

There are many heart diseases and conditions that are heriditary and may be out of your control but in most instances you can drastically reduce your chances of complications by putting some thought into your diet and by getting proper exercise and sleep.
